FAQ's

What is the minimum Swimming Ability required?

All learn to surf students need to be able to swim a minimum of 50 metres confidently although most lessons will be held in water shallow enough to stand most of the time. Surf conditions dictate how far out we will go to stay safe.

How Many Lessons are needed?

It's a good idea to get at least 3 lessons to start your surfing. You will learn so many new things on day one and it usually takes a few days to process all this information and make good progress. After that you can practice on your own (with a friend for security), if you have the equipment, and then come back when you have mastered those real basics. Or stay with us in lessons untill you feel confident enough to practice on your own (again, always with a friend).

During school terms 1 & 4, we run maintenance lessons for school aged kids during the week after school and women's lessons during the day, so you can keep learning under the watchful eye of an experienced coach.

What will I Learn?

For the first time surfer or beginner we emphasise safety first, then: getting to know your surfboard, understanding the surf conditions today, learning the basics of handling the board, getting out to the wave catching zone, catching a wave and riding (standing) to the shore. Expect to stand up at your first lesson, maybe once or maybe 10 times if conditions allow. Most importantly, we hope you have a lot of fun.

How Young or how Old for starting out?

We take children as young as 8 years old for lessons if enough coaches are available to assist. They must be very confident swimmers and have parents or guardians with us on the beach, in case they get cold or tired and want to get out before the lesson ends.

On the other end of the scale, our most senior surfer who mastered standing was 64 years old. It's more about fitness than age so make sure you let us know what shape you are in and your abilities (or limitations).
